A new perspective article presenting the goals and research agenda of the Subseasonal Applications for Agriculture and Environment (SAGE) project has been published in Climate Services.
Led by Marisol Osman, the article, “The Subseasonal Applications for Agriculture and Environment (SAGE) project within the World Weather Research Programme: Making subseasonal predictions more useful for sectoral applications,” examines why the uptake of subseasonal forecasts remains limited despite their growing availability and potential value for climate-sensitive sectors.
Drawing on the achievements and lessons of the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction (S2S) Project, the article identifies key challenges in moving from prediction science to operational climate services. These include understanding how subseasonal information can support real decision-making, determining when forecasts can be trusted, communicating uncertainty effectively, and demonstrating the benefits of forecast-informed action.
The article also outlines SAGE’s research and implementation agenda, with a strong emphasis on user needs and on making subseasonal predictions more useful, usable, and used in decision-making.
